Sacramento's storied Solomon Dubnick Gallery has been sold and relocated from midtown to the burgeoning arts district developing along downtown's R Street corridor. The gallery reopened in December 2010 at 720 Rhodin Lane, between R and S streets, under the direction of new owner Robert Andersen.

Andersen, a 25-year veteran of the local art scene, says the gallery will be in the same brick building as the Pamela Skinner Gallery, near the Verge Gallery + Studio Project, the Art Foundry Gallery and Crocker Art Museum. "This is becoming a beautiful destination area," he says of the corridor. "You can spend an entire day going from one gallery to another."

Richard Duning's Busy Year

This year Richard rose to a challenge, and filled a new Eureka restaurant with over 40 new paintings. The walls of the new Bayfront Restaurant, on the boardwalk along Humboldt bay, came to life with vivid abstract, symbolic, and dreamlike images. They can be seen by visitors 11 am to 9 pm every day.

The exhibition was so successful that he was asked to mount another exhibition in the new Kobe Restaurant building in Redding, California. Large and vivid paintings, including several of the large 8x6 foot canvases, brought the space alive with color and pulsing images. At the moment, over 70 of Richard’s works are on view in California.

Summer was spent in France, taking a workshop in wood-fired pottery; and camping trips in the Sierra mountains of California, where Richard created sets of prisma stick drawings, his favorite form of travel art.

Joseph Bellacera's "Flight Patterns, An Aerial View of the Local Landscape," will be on display at Capital Public Radio from 6-9 pm. Join us for light refreshments, gourmet wines, live music and stunning works by a local artist.

About the artist:
Today Bellacera finds inspiration throughout his travels. Views of the ocean, deserts of the southwest, aerial views of agricultural fields, landscapes of the Sacramento delta region, ancient walls, mosaics, and the intimate patterns of nature found in his garden all combine to inspire him. In his luminous abstract and landscape paintings radiant forms emerge and dissolve to evoke feelings of transcendence and the Divine. Bellacera comments, "I use the alchemy of color and light to create the experience of seeing something, as if for the first time, before we define, name and categorize it. In this way, through painting, the mystery and awe of discovery and creation is continuously renewed." The most profound artistic influences on Bellacera's work have been that of JMW Turner's emotional and atmospheric seascapes from the early 19th century; Kandinsky's early 20th century spiritual abstract improvisations; and the more recent work of James Turrell, a Southwest installation artist who works with light.

Leslie Toms Workshops in October

Hi Everyone,

There are two very cool events coming up. The first one is Saturday, October 2nd from 2 to 5.
This is billed as the "Jesuit Art Event" to benefit Jesuit High School. It will be held at the Mahony Art Loft at 14th and R Streets from 2pm to 5pm. The event is free and there will be refreshments as well as art by many of Sacramento's most prominent artists. There will be art in the loft, in the halls as well as on the roof top patio. Parking is very easy on the streets surrounding but bring some quarters if you want to park at a metered space. Don't miss this one! This is one of those fabulous word-of-mouth events in a very cool building.
I'll be there with some of my work and hope to see you.

The second event is a workshop I am teaching at the Patris' S-12 Gallery located at 12th & S Streets. This is sure to be one of the most fun classes you will ever take . . the Cigar Box Painting Class. Each class concentrates on a different stage of creating these special treasures. You will be able to create as many as you like! Starts Friday, October 15 and continues on October 22 and 29 from 10 to noon. Following the class on November 13th we will have a Cigar Box Art Show and reception. Oil paints or acrylics are recommended for this workshop. Class fee is $95 which includes a cigar box that you choose from my private stash. A list of supplies will be provided

Artist Lecture: Maija Peeples-Bright

Room 547 (Music Building), at the corner of College Oak & Myrtle Ave.

Born in German occupied Latvia in 1942, Maija Peeples-Bright's parents, Herberts and Biruta Gegeris, were forced to flee the country with their infant daughter. Through the assistance of relief agencies they were able to find a sponsor in Orangevale, California. In 1951 the family moved to Sacramento, and when Maija began attending college at the University of California, Davis, in the 1960's, she was a math major. A requirement for graduation was that she complete an art class, and it was that first class, taught by William T. Wiley, that prompted her to change her declared major to art. She earned a Master's Degree in 1965, and the home that she shared with her husband, a professor at the San Francisco Art Institute, became known as "The Rainbow House". Painted inside and out with every color created by Dutch Boy brand house paint, visitors included UCD notables such as Wiley, Robert Arneson, Clayton Bailey, Roy de Forest, Wayne Thiebaud, and Peter VandenBerge, in addition to those from the Art Institute included Joan Brown, Jay DeFeo, and Manuel Neri. Many of the artists either became known as California Funk artists, or associated with the Bay Area Figurative style. Funny phrases, silly creatures, and word puns continue to inspire Maija Peeples-Bright's drawings, paintings, sculptures and prints which are held in high regard in collections throughout California, Nevada, New York, and Canada.

I will be teaching an acrylic workshop over the Columbus Day weekend October 9, 10, & 11 (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) at Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica. The workshop, Paint Like the Old Dutch Masters with Acrylic, will focus on my unique glazing and layering acrylic technique, which resembles oil paintings of old Dutch master painters.

Two-Night Event

Opening at La Luz de Jesus Gallery on April 2nd (alongside fellow pop-surrealist Max Grundy), Read Between the Lines: The Art of Dennis Larkins, is a three-week show - his first L.A. showing in three years - featuring a new body of painted three-dimensional-relief extravaganzas on display for the first time. Pioneering and refining a bold new approach to artistic expression, Dennis works in a style forged from both traditional and space age ingredients, creating layered works of arresting depth and intense optical punch. Growing up bathed in the glow of the Atomic Age is bound to scramble any thinking person’s circuits. Dennis has been turning to art to heal his radiation burns from the time America started planting its own mushroom forest out in the Nevada desert a few decades ago.

The opening accompanies the release of Larkins’ book, Startling Art: Revealing the Art of Dennis Larkins (published by La Luz De Jesus/Last Gasp), which takes an often-irreverent look at one man's creative journey, both personal and professional. From his legendary posters for the Grateful Dead and monumental set designs (including many never before published photos of his days with Bill Graham Productions) to the meat of the book, a riotous smörgåsbord of pulp-surrealist fine art, page after picture-packed page reveals the startling contents of one of the "great unrecognized creative minds of the past half century."

Forever Free celebrates the importance of the American River to regional communities and beyond. This themed, group exhibition and related events will showcase over twenty visual, performing and literary artists who are inspired by the American River Canyons. Maija Peeles-Bright runs the gamut; from one of the originators of the California “Funk Art Movement” in the 1960’s to her current body of work in oil, acrylic, ceramic, textiles and mixed media reflecting and expanding her full range.

Not only is she truly an original, her work embodies funk humor in conjunction with sophisticated primitivism; fusing the creation of zany creatures, loveable animals and of course, the brightest and boldest of colors.

She heralds from a rich and dynamic artistic dynasty. Along with her contemporaries, Peter VandenBerge, DavidGilhooly, Robert Arneson, Roy Deforest, Bruce Nauman and a selective group of other avant garde artists, she played an important role in molding the first “Group Mess” at the Belmonte Gallery, as well as annual shows at the renowned Candy Store for over 25 years. Bruce Nauman proclaimed her body of work quintessentially as “icons”.

Today, this iconic significance is very prevalent, as is Maija’s creative heritage, including one woman shows, group exhibitions, teaching, art in public places, permanent museum and private collections, publications and so much more.

Maija’s work is as pertinent today as ever and merges the hotbed of art with her affection for brilliant colors, an ever abundance of living things and an undying love for rebellion against establishment art.

These two pieces are by James Budde, who had a fun Popeye themed show with SD Gallery in 2005. Here we have a sculpture of Hillary Clinton as a slot machine, and below a fanciful teapot composed with whimsical figures. Both of these works are on display in the gallery.

Robert Arneson Tribute Show- Davis Art Center

Solomon Dubnick Gallery artists Jeff Nebeker, Peter and Camille VandenBerge all have ceramic works on view in the Robert Arneson tribute show at the Davis Art Center in Davis. Jeff Nebeker has two new ceramic busts included in this exhibition! Please treat yourself and support this show with a visit.

In January '10, the Davis Art Center will kick off its 50th Anniversary by celebrating one of California’s most irreverent Pop artists - Robert Arneson - through an exhibit showcasing the impact Arneson has had on artists in our community and beyond. Arneson pieces from the collections of The Nelson Gallery and the Davis Art Center will be on display, as well as works by Arneson students Donna Billick, Robert Brady, David Gilhooly, Kurt Fishback and Tony Natsoulas, among others.

Glass Artist John de Wit to Speak at Solomon Dubnick Gallery

Renowned glass artist, John de Wit, will present a slide show and lecture on his work at 2:00 pm on 2^nd Saturday, January 9^th at Solomon Dubnick Gallery.

John is recognized internationally as a leading glass artist for his unique and ever-evolving work. Born in Panama in1952, de Wit was raised in Woodland, CA and attended California State University, Chico, simultaneously studying in Sociology and Ceramics. He graduated with a Bachelors of Art Degree in Sociology in 1976 and continued his education with postgraduate studies in Ceramics and Glass before accepting professional employment at Orient & Flume Art Glass in 1978.

John moved to Washington State in the early 1980’s and soon opened his Cultus Bay Studio on Whidbey Island. After working as a glassblowing assistant for Dale Chihuly in Seattle, de Wit went on to teach at Pilchuck Glass School, Pratt Fine Art Center, and several workshops and lectures in France.

Pursuing his vision of using “glass as a canvas” de Wit is credited with developing the innovative use of high-fire enamel paints in the glass blowing process . Ultimately, his works are both paintings and sculptural vessels, with interiors and exteriors, multiple layers and all of the qualities of paint, metallic leaf and the glass itself.

John has participated in solo and group exhibitions across the United States as well as in Europe and Asia. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Gold Prize at the 4th Cheongju International Craft Competition in South Korea. His work is included in important public, private and corporate collections world wide, including the collections of the Boeing and Microsoft corporations, the Corning Glass Museum, di Rosa Preserve in Napa, California, and the Niijima Contemporary Glass Art Museum in Niijima, Japan. His sculpture has been the focus of feature articles in national publications such as American Craft, Glasswork Magazine, Glass Art Magazine, Glass Quarterly, and the French Revue Céramique & Verre.

John's inspiration comes from various sources: African objects, Japanese and Korean ceramics and Persian and Indian metal work. He combines his own painting techniques with hybridized Swedish and Italian glass blowing processes. When it comes to describing a theme or thread in his work, the artist states that, "The vessels and objects I produce reflect an interest in glass transcending its common purpose and achieving a sculptural possibility".

A Unique Ceramic Find!

SD Gallery recently acquired this unique ceramic plate piece by Erik Gronborg through a private collector. This piece was purchased during the Crocker Art Auction in 1983. When was the last time you saw ceramic works infused with photographic imagery? This piece is a beautiful find and would make a great addition to an eclectic home.

Leslie C. Birleson is a conceptual artist whose oeuvre ranges from carved granite and mosaic tile to screen-print and light installations. He has produced a number of large scale installation works including two Art in Public Places works for the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. "Traveling Light" is installed above the ticket counter in Terminal A at Sacramento Int'l Airport, and his small park-like project titled, "Open Circle" is on Riverside Blvd. near Land Park.

Birleson's "River Series" of large scale oil paintings reveals his emotional response to life along the Sacramento River levees. The seasons bring a change of palette and texture, from the lush rain of winter to the dry heat of summer, but the elements of land and water remain constant along the shoreline.

EXTRAORDINARY OBJECTS

Through the month of December Solomon Dubnick Gallery presents the work of four exceptional artists producing work in a variety of mediums. Whether functional or not, the pieces transcend the concept of artwork as being decorative and each stands on its own as an “extraordinary object”.

John de Wit, a native of Woodland, is among the most innovative glass artists working in the Seattle area. His work explores "the vessel as canvas" through painting and incising techniques. John has gained prestigious international honors for his work, and most recently served as Artist in Residence at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma.

Paul DiPasqua has spent much of his career assembling things out of found materials in order to redeem our culture's wealth of misdirected efforts and horrible things. He's also produced a large body of work in photography, collage, painting and mixed media. Paul lives, works, and teaches in the Chico area.

Laura De Anna maintains her jewelry studio in the Sierra foothills near Placerville. She was recently honored as an "Emerging Artist" at the annual Celebration of Craftswomen in San Francisco. Many of you may have seen Laura's work at our 2nd Saturdays on 20th Street.

Gale Hart is a Sacramento painter, sculptor, gallery owner and animal rights activist who produces remarkable furniture out of recycled steel. Gale has also assembled a number of widely acclaimed theme exhibitions at her studio, in addition to her prodigious output of artwork.

A show of his Relic Series opened in Riverside, California. This group of paintings are embedded with objects such as leaves, sticks, rocks, gourds, – even a snakeskin. Some are on paper, some on board in a variety of sizes. Richard’s opening was part of the Riverside Artwalk, and he had a good look at the growing art scene in that city.

Then Richard jet-setted back home, where an exhibition of his collaborative dream paintings was opening at Piante Gallery in Eureka. Richard and a friend, Madeline McMurray, have been sharing dreams and painting them together for several years. This exhibition showed 18 of their big, 30x44” works, acrylic on paper, a colorful and dynamic exploration of images and interactions.

Before returning home with the Riverside pieces, Richard and his partner Nancy fulfilled a dream of camping for a week in Chaco Canyon. There, they studied the ancient Puebloan ruins and artifacts, and Richard created a series of sketches and drawings. This trip culminated a summer of travel, which included a pottery village in France, ancient ruins in Sicily and even more ancient Neolithic ruins in Malta, all inspiration for future artwork.
