Mark Bryan "Hard Times" Exhibition -Steynberg Gallery, San Luis Obispo

Press Release
For immediate release

Mark Bryan painting exhibition “Hard Times”

Beginning Nov. 20th Steynberg Gallery will be exhibiting recent oil paintings and prints by Mark Bryan in a new show titled “Hard Times”

Bryan’s paintings always seem to reflect the mood of our times. About this show Bryan states, “The underlying theme is the hard times that so many of us, our country and the world are experiencing right now. The obvious topics have to do with the poor economy, the continuing wars, the environmental crisis and a general sense that things are out of control and not going well. There are also works that deal with "Hard Times" on the personal and psychological level.” On the surface this exhibition may sound like a real downer but Bryan has taken his usual humorous and satirical approach to these subjects. “I think we can always use a good laugh, especially now”, he said

Notable works in this show are a Large piece titled “The Republic of Suicide” which depicts the Washington mall as never seen before and a parody piece of Norman Rockwell’s famous thanksgiving painting “Freedom from Want”. Bryan’s version is titled “The Grateful Dead”.

Bryan has become known as a deadly satirist taking on the villains of the day and the stupidities of human behavior in surprising and delightful fashion. He is also known for his decidedly surreal and whimsical works.

Bryan’s work has received wide recognition. He has exhibited throughout California and the US. His work has appeared in articles and cover art for numerous magazines and publications. He has also been featured on satirical and political web sites across the US and internationally.
